Summary: | Hadith literature contains certain traditions, which were understood and practically
implemented during the life of the Prophet (s.a.w.) and in the periods adjacent to it, but
these traditions do not appear in harmony with the modern time. It does not mean that
these traditions are to be rejected. The Prophet’s (s.a.w.) message is universal hence his
traditions are to be applied in every situation whatsoever. In a situation of conflict
between the demands of the time and the apparent meaning of the tradition, some kind of
reinterpretation is to be made so as to justify the application of the traditions of the
Prophet (s.a.w.).The main reason for the differences in the interpretation of those
traditions is that the scholars have applied different angels while treating the traditions.
As is well known a tradition of the Prophet (s.a.w.) is analyzed from various angles such
as the background, the objective, the spirit, the means, the allegory, and the reality. When
the scholars are different in their identification of these six angles, there occur the
differences in the interpretation of the tradition concerned. This research is devoted to
carry out four main tasks concerning the traditions with different interpretations: (1)
collection of many of those traditions that have been interpreted differently, (2)
discussion of the interpretations of those traditions by classical scholars, (3) analysis of
the interpretation of those selected traditions made by modern scholars, (4) explanation of
how the traditions concerned can be practically applied to man’s day to day life. This
study focuses on the differences over interpretations of the traditions concerned between
the scholars of early period as well as those of the contemporary period. An effort has
been made in the discussion to identify the ways of compromise between the differences
of interpretations. The methodology applied in this research is composed of two
components, inductive and analytical. |
