Summary: | The impact of modernisation on a country does not only affect the lives of its people but it also introduces a new culture, a new educational system and most of all, new ways of interpreting the world as a whole. This dissertation focuses on the study of two prominent Hong Kong female writers, Xu Xi and Agnes Lam, who write in English and whose works have been internationally published and acknowledged. The study aims at uncovering the objectives of their writings as well as to examine the ideas they propagate in their works. Though the writings of these two writers belong to two different genres, in which Xu Xi writes fiction while Agnes Lam composes poetry, the main attempt is to examine Hong Kong women's voices in general as reflected by the two writers. This study concentrates on four works by Xu Xi, namely Chinese Walls (1994), Hong Kong Rose (1997), History's Fiction (2001) and Overleaf Hong Kong: Stories and Essays of the Chinese, Overseas (2004) and two poetry collections by Agnes Lam, Woman to Woman and Other Poems (1997) and Water Wood Pure Splendour (2001). The writings by these two authors will reflect how the tradition in Hong Kong and the one that was brought by the British discord one another and hence, form a new way of understanding a culture which is built out of the collision. Xu Xi's way of writing exhibits the real issues that take place in Hong Kong, where the women are facing a dilemma on whether to be strictly bound by their old tradition or let their quandaries be noticed by the community they live in. Agnes Lam speaks of her thoughts about things that happen to her and around her, which concern her both as a Hong Kong woman and as an individual. It is hoped that this study will be a step forward towards understanding the minds of Hong Kong women writers especially when they write on cultural issues and the impact of modernisation on their society. |
