Summary: | This study examines the Turkish policy towards Iraqi Kurds during 2003-2008. Northern Iraq had strategic significance during Ottoman Empire; it was the buffer area, which protected Ottoman territories from Safavid Empir's expansion. Northern Iraq "Kurdistan Region" remains a strategic area for the new Turkish republic, and Ankara has applied different policies to keep its influence in that area. The study has found that the following factors affect Turkish policy towards Iraqi Kurds, (i) nationalism, this factor is considered one of the basic principles of the Turkish republic, (ii) national interest, because an independent Kurdistan on Turkish border will affect Turkish national interest in terms of stability, and unity of the state, and (iii) national security, it refers to the existence of a semi-independent Kurdistan on the border with Turkey, which is a source of threat to Turkey. This study recommends that both Ankara and Iraqi Kurds should cooperate with each other, and they need to engage in collective efforts to protect the interests and security of both sides. The study used qualitative methods of data collection, and relied upon primary resources, and the study also benefited from secondary resources of data. |
