Summary: | This study discusses pause's ( waqf ) positions in two riwayahs (narrations) of the
Qur’anic Readings (Qira'at): Riwayah of Hafs from 'Asim and riwayah of Warsh
from Nafi'. It compares the pause positions of both of them, and analyses their
syntactic and semantic differences. The study adopts an analytic descriptive method
to explain similarities and differences between both riwayahs by analysing selected
samples from pause's positions in the Qur’anic verses. In this regard the reseacher
carries out syntactic and semantic analysis for all the positions of alternate
pause (al-waqf al-muta'niq) and mandatory pause (al-waqf al-lazim) in the Holy
Qur’an. On the other hand, the prohibited pause ( al-waqf al-mamnu') is investigated
only in Surat al-Baqarah, Surat al-Nisa’, and Surat Al 'Imran, and some samples are
selected for the preferred pause (al-waqf al- ja’iz ) from Surat al-Baqarah. The
findings of the study show that : (a) There are big diffrences, syntactically and
semantically, between the two riwayahs in the conditions of pause or continuation,
but a few similarities are also noted in some pause’s positions between them. (b)The
two riwayahs have diffrences in pause’s marks: The riwayah of Hafs from 'Asim
have varieties in pause’s mark as follow: /

( / , while the riwayah
of Warsh from Nafi' uses (ص (or ( Œ). The reseacher referred to three different
copies of the QuraÉn for the riwayah of Hafs from 'Asim and two copies of the
Qur’an for the riwayah of Warsh from Nafi'. The statistic table of pause’s positons
shows that there are ١٠ position of alternate pause, ٢١ positions of mandatory pause,
and ١٦٥ positions of prohibited pause in the Qur’Én. Due to the importance of pause
and continuation in the Holy Qur’an, the reseacher suggests that future studies handle
other Qur’anic Readings and their riwayahs concerning pause and continuation, in
order to enhance undestanding of the Holy Qur’an and the application of Its
injunctions. |
