Summary: | The purpose of this study is to provide a general exposition on the meaning and concept of sabr and in particular applying it to conflict management as an important panacea in today's widespread situations of hostility and clash of civilizations. The way forward would therefore be to unveil the concept of sabr as a fundamental virtue in Islam. This study assumes that sabr be reinterpreted to mean self-restraint, noncommitment of violence, preference to political and peaceful resolutions over goingto- war as a solution to resolve conflict. In this sense sabr is not an empty word and rhetoric, but a pragmatic action. One can observe its practical realization, from Qur'anic revelations, in the prophet's dealings with the unbelievers. It has a practical virtue. This study analyzes the concept of sabr in the above stated meanings as their expressions found in both the Makkan and Madinan revelations, and how could the Qur'anic injunction be reinvigorated as one of the practical means in conflict management. The methods involved library research through reading and collecting information through content analysis from primary and secondary sources. On the other hand the deductive and inductive methods have been used by referring to specific areas discussed by the writers on management, conflict and sabr. The outcome attained from this study includes that the concept of sabr can be properly translated into action oriented strategies in conflict management in various contexts at personal, organizational, national and international levels. Sabr therefore is very important in resolving conflicts and generating peace and harmony. If sabr becomes the basis in diplomatic relations among nations human beings would be able to live more peaceful lives. Many conflicts and problems among nations can be solved. The practice of sabr needs to be done through the methodology of Islam. |
