Summary: | The study looks into the English translation of prepositions in the Holy Quran while emphasizing the different implications that a single preposition might have. Further, the study investigates the significance of a preposition in constructing different shades of meaning. In particular, the study looks into the role of this meaning in the selection of a specific preposition to achieve accuracy in the rendered meaning upon the selection of a preposition from the source to the target language. While the study has made, in the first three chapters, use of the inductive and descriptive methods, it has resorted in Chapter Four to the analytical and inductive methods so as to apply a number of ways that the study has come up with and deemed appropriate and effective for the translation of the prepositions in general and those of the Holy Quran in particular. In doing so, the study has looked into two of the translations of the Holy Quran: Marmaduke Pickthall's and that of The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd Complex. The study has found that a preposition could be translated into one of five ways as follows: it can either be translated literally or by another preposition or replaced by a noun or by a verb or omitted. The study has also highlighted the role a verb plays in the kind of preposition to be utilized. Finally, the study has stressed the need to consult the available exegeses of the Holy Quran in order to determine the import of the verse in question and the special meaning of the preposition used; and thus select the appropriate equivalent to the preposition to be translated. |
