Nonetheless, the developments that Muslims are experiencing today have been complicated by a mixture of secularism, modernism, materialism, scientism, individualism, and rationalism that are embodied in the concept of modernity. This concept of modernity promotes an excessive emphasis on reason and senses in dealing with all aspects of human affairs. Therefore, a theoretical framework of the concept of modernity is needed to get a clear picture of what the concept of modernity is all about. In relation to this, a case study of postgraduate students of Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (KIRKHS) and Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences (KENMS) at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is conducted in order to examine the students' understanding of the concept of modernity. There are 419 postgraduate respondents who were randomly selected. A set of questionnaire that consists of 51 items was constructed, then distributed randomly to the 419 postgraduate students enrolled in KIRKHS and KENMS programmes. 400 out of the 419 respondents completed the questionnaire. The data obtained were analysed by descriptive procedures and Independent Sample T-test via the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The findings demonstrate that postgraduate students in KIRKHS and KENMS have a high understanding of modernity and its concept. Overall, KIRKHS postgraduate students show better understanding than those in KENMS, especially PhD students who are more critical in their understanding of this issue. | ||
