520 |a The purpose of this thesis is to examine the representation of Malays and Malay culture in selected contemporary Malaysian short stories. The works used are short stories by Lee Kok Liang, K. S. Maniam, Anwar Ridhwan, Shirley Lim, Syed Adam Aljafri, T.R.R. Raman, Karim Raslan, and Lisa Ho King Li. In a comparative discussion of these stories, the portrayal of Malays and Malay culture in the short stories will be examined by juxtaposing the works by Malay authors and non-Malay authors to see its similarities and differences. By analyzing the selected stories, this study intends to examine how Malay and Malay culture are seen from different perspectives and then come up with the preponderant principles that construct Malay identity. Through the study on works by authors of diverse ethnicities, this thesis seeks to investigate Malays' attitude/s towards themselves, between them and towards other ethnic groups, and vice versa. These elements will be utilized to establish Malay identity in relation to other ethnic groups and their perception of themselves using theories of representation, ethnicity, and culture. It has been found that Malays, owing to different experiences, are diverse in their representation and cannot be labelled with a certain name or definition.
