Description
Summary:The study aims to reveal the translators' methods of translating cohesive devices in Qur'anic narrative discourse into Malay language. It also aims to find out problems underlying the translation of cohesive devices from Arabic to Malay, in addition to providing important observations that should be taken into account during the translation of these devices. To achieve these goals, the study utilized two approaches: descriptive and analytical, which were divided into two parts: theoretical and analysis. In the analysis, two kinds of cohesive devices are being discussed, firstly cohesive devices by reference and secondly, cohesive devices by conjunctions. Analysis was carried out on selected Qur'anic narrative discourse in order to find out the methods applied by the translators during the process of translating these devices into Malay language as an effort to gain cohesiveness of the text and communicativeness in translation. It is found that observing the translation of cohesive devices in the Qur'anic narrative discourse by using appropriate methods to suit the target language system and style is important. This is because the Qur'an contains distinguished linguistic and stylistic characteristics that must be displayed in translation, so as to establish the sequence of events and relationship between the text components as well as to convey the message of the text clearly without any ambiguity. The study also discovers that the methods of translating cohesive devices in the Qur'anic narrative discourse vary between literal translation, transposition, modulation, and equivalence, which supported the argument that applying a single method in translation is not possible. In addition, it is found that the translators managed to present an obvious cohesive relations in some places of their translation despite using various methods. This indicates their concerns about achieving communicativeness and textual cohesive in the target text.
