Screening, purification and characterization of bioactive peptides from selected Malaysian tubers for anticancer activity /
Bioactive compounds are short length protein fragments which have a positive impact on the functions and conditions of living beings. On the other hand, tubers are a very common vegetable among Malaysians. Cancer is currently on the rise and the treatment for it is very costly and carries many side...

On the other hand, tubers are a very common vegetable among Malaysians. Cancer is currently on the rise and the treatment for it is very costly and carries many side effects. This study aimed to investigate the properties of tubers to determine the anticancer activity for cancer treatment and to purify the compound in optimized conditions. The research began with the extraction of bioactive compounds from the tubers. Followed by screening for the most bioactive compounds available using the anticancer assay. The samples were then tested for their properties. Taro yam had shown the best inhibitory effect on the HeLa cells with IC50 of 8 mg/mL. The yam sample was then purified with gel filtrations and further purified with optimized ion-exchange column chromatography. The Design Expert® version 6.0.8 software was used to create a design of experiment with two factors and 2 centre points. The factors were pH and buffer concentration. Ten runs were generated. Response surface methodology was used to analyze the data. The model and pH were significant (p < 0.05) but buffer concentration was not. The interactions between the two factors were insignificant; therefore the optimized process condition could not be generated. | ||
