Description
Summary:The researcher saw that writing in second language is a complex process that needs to ensure the realization of mind and the diverse processes and strategies. In addition, using strategies in writing is a factor of good writing production. The aim of this study is to investigate the strategies used by high school students when writing Arabic compositions, and what problems they have confronted as well as their ways of overcoming these problems. A sample have been used in this case of study to get more information that will help in deep understanding of the study. Fifth-grade students of Darussalam Islamic Boarding School on period 1436-1437/ 2015-2016 have chosen, three students with high achievement, and three others with underachievement in Arabic composition. The researcher used three methods of data collection namely: thinking-aloud protocol, interview, and observation. Specific processes and strategies were identified and categorized using a procedure based on coding schemes that was adopted from Yap (1999) with some modification of certain terms given to the classification of Oxford. The result of this study revealed that the problems faced by most students when writing an Arabic composition are understanding the topic given and generating the production of an idea, which makes it even more difficult for them to create a good sentence. This case might affect the number, suitability and effectiveness of strategies used by students in the writing process. In addition, students will not be able to organize their ideas and they will write everything on their minds without any sort of arrangement between sentences and paragraphs. This is because the students aren't accustomed to the habit of writing drafts. Moreover, the study also revealed that students were not able to put words and configure appropriate sentences due to the lack of Arabic vocabulary and they would have to recall the vocabulary they have learnt inside and outside the classroom besides the option of choosing to construct simple sentences. Strategies inclusive of repeating words, rehearsing sentences, taking down notes and translating are the most commonly –used strategies among students.
