520 |a This study examines the semantic dimensions in the differences and similarities in terms of 'assimilation' (idgham) in the recitation of Abi 'Amr ibn al- 'Ala' and al- Kisa'i. It intends to clarify the meanings and phonetic aspects extracted from word structure. Elements of assimilation in the verses of the Qur'an were scrutinized by means of descriptive and analytical methods of the first ten parts (juz') of the Qur'an. From these first ten parts, 91 points (mawadi') were extracted for analysis. The researcher arrived at a few conclusions, that the two imams were in agreement on certain characters of 'assimilation' (idgham) in the structure of words, but on some other occasions they also disagreed. Therefore, it is found that there were some similarities in meanings (ma'ani) instead of differences in terms of 'assimilation' in word structure, sometimes in some other cases, the meanings complemented each other and sometimes the meanings were also totally different depending on the context. Therefore, the connotation varied despite the unity of meanings. In the case of the 'strong emphasis' (tashdid) element with two identical letters, it was found that there were two different styles for the same meaning, and [in fact] they added a meaning to another. Each imam in their own school chose their reading with a 'double sound' (tad'if); this is to identify what comes from that style to show its frequency in the 'verb' (fi'l) for certain things and also to emphasize it, and in another occasion, it is not stressed on the frequency of its use, but to show the differences in the dialects used by the Arabs. It seemed that the 'strong emphasis' (tashdid) [in recitation] by replacing the original with the closest letter in forming the words was beneficial in terms of speed of action and command, and also in insisting on both. Furthermore, it harmonized between the letters in terms of their characters and place where the letters appeared. This articulation therefore, arrived at a conclusion that the semantic dimensions and phonetical plurality in the 'preposition with significant meanings' were in fact limited to assert 'thing' as well as their emphasis and comprehensiveness, and their meanings also may vary from one point to another depending on the contexts and situations. Based on this articulation, it is clear how the assimilation phenomenon can be approached and studied.
