Participants were two Malay males and two Malay females aged between 16-24 years old who have had sexual intercourse outside marriage. Participants were recruited from shelter homes in the Kuala Lumpur area. Semi-structured interviews were carried out to discuss topics pertinent to the perception of youths on premarital sex, the triggering factors influencing youths' decisions to engage in premarital sex and the effects of religion on their decision-making. The current findings reveal that parents, siblings, peers, school and the media play an important role in influencing youths' mind and behaviour towards risky sexual behaviours. Further, stress and fun were the reasons youths engaged in voluntary premarital sex. Another factor that is religiosity was found to be a protective factor in the abstinence of youths from engaging in premarital sex. | ||
