Summary: | This study aimed to explore the sense of identity of Acehnese adolescent survivors of tsunami and armed conflict, their current issues and challenges and the way they cope with the issues and challenges. The adolescents' motivational factors were also identified. This study used a qualitative research method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 participants aged 15-20 years old who lived or studied in Islamic boarding school in Banda Aceh and Aceh Utara. Interviews were also carried out with two school teachers and four religious teachers working with the adolescents. The interviews were transcribed into verbatim and analyzed thematically. Four themes emerged under the sense of identity section: sense of maturity, sense of morality, future plan, and “I am different”. With regard to the current issues faced by the adolescents, five themes were discovered, which include: “problem at school”, “relationship issues”, “dealing with emotion”, “peer influence”, and “financial problem.” However, the adolescents employed several ways of coping such as religious coping, social support, avoidance, positive thinking, problem solving, and withdrawal/ helplessness. Lastly, five themes emerged regarding factors that motivate them in their life. Those are “to be successful and to make my family happy”, “to make my wish come true”, “to be useful for others”, “encouragement by significant others”, and “inspired by environment”. The findings indicate that despite the painful life experiences they went through, the adolescents appear to be able to develop sense of identity, gratitude and mission in life. Implication of the findings, limitation of the study and recommendation for future research were also discussed. |
