| الملخص: | This study aims to highlight the effectiveness of translating Malay cultural items in three Malay folk stories which are 'Si Tanggang', 'Bawang Putih Bawang Merah' and 'Puteri Saadong' into Arabic language. It attempts to explore the methods of translating Malay cultural items which have no equivalence in Arabic culture. It also focuses on discussing the techniques used by translators to overcome this problem. It adopts a deductive-analysis method based on various classifications of cultural items which focused on the differences between Malay and Arabic cultures. The researcher found that there are three types of cultural differences between both cultures; whether it is similar, shared, or absent in the target language. It used various methods based on literal and free translation. It concludes that the translator has two choices in translating folk stories; either to retain the cultural item by using foreignization method or to domesticate it although sometimes this can lead to the loss of the item itself or its semantic meaning. |
