The purposes of the process are to give more attractive appearance to the vehicles and to provide the layer of protection against corrosion and weathering. The objective of the research is to identify and analyze the factors affecting the quality performance of painting process at Company RST's Paint Shop. The paint shop was unable to perform the painting process and deliver the painted vehicle bodies as per customer specifications and comply to their requirements. The research concentrates on the fiber defect detected at Top Coat Area as the major problem of paint deficiency. After undergoing genba investigation, data collection, trials and data analysis, the root causes of the problem were identified. The research utilizes the application of Six Sigma DMAIC approach to conduct the improvement activities. Design of Experiment (DOE) was carried out to determine the best option on parameter setting of the tools used in the painting process. From experiments conducted, the optimal setting for spray gun was 3.5 bars for air pressure and 450ml/minutes for fluid delivery. The implementation of Six Sigma approach had succeeded to minimize defect per unit (DPU) from 10 DPU to less than 3 DPU. The result from the research has provided an insight on actual successful deployment of DMAIC with application of its various statistical tools and techniques, and as the systematic problem solving framework on solving actual industrial issues such as painting problem.
