Description
Summary:This thesis seeks to address approaches and trends of reformatic Qura'nic Tafsir in the 20th century in Indian sub-continent which is done through various methodologies, trends and ways by intellectuals in the Indian sub-continent. The thesis emphasizes on a diversity of voices in order to provide a 'snapshot' of approaches associated with the Qur'an in the Indian sub-continent today. It remains part of a creative and intellectual effort among Muslims in the same area to project new ideas and to assert that Islam and the Qur'an are compatible with the aspirations of Muslims all over the world today. In my observation, most of the approaches and trends are not strictly examples of traditional Tafsir; rather, they are attempts made by Muslim scholars to engage the Qur'an with current and contemporary life and with existing community. Most of them have examined practical problems within the community even though some are written through the theoretical process. Moreover, all those reflect the concerns, interests and approaches of a new generation of Muslim scholars in the Indian sub-continent. Reformatic approaches to the Qur'an in the Indian sub-continent are, of course, related to developments in this area. Some external practices, reflections and issues are also focused on the activities of Muslim scholars in this sub-continent.
