Maleic anhydride polyethylene (MAPE) agent and electron beam (EB) irradiation technique were applied as HDPE/EPDM blend and OMMT filled HDPE/EPDM treatments. HDPE/EPDM blend and OMMT filled HDPE/EPDM were first prepared via melt intercalation technique at different OMMT loadings. For EB irradiation technique, the absorbed dose were varied between 50, 100, 150 and 200 kGy, respectively. The effectiveness of these surface modification treatments were compared with control one (no surface modification) and analyzed based on the mechanical, thermal and gas barrier tests as well as morphological examinations. It was found that the mechanical, thermal and gas barrier properties of both HDPE/EPDM blend and OMMT filled HDPE/EPDM were significantly enhanced by EB irradiation technique as compared to the control and MAPE systems. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the existence of delamination structure by surface modification techniques especially by EB irradiation absorbed dose of 100 kGy based on the disappearance of characteristic peaks. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) illustrated the mixed intercalated and partial exfoliated structures of OMMT filled HDPE/EPDM with EB irradiation technique. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) revealed the stacking condition of OMMT particles was greatly reduced by surface modification agents particularly by EB irradiation absorbed dose of 100 kGy as evidenced by finer and smoother surface.
