Description
Summary:Studying the approach or methods of a certain scholar in a certain science is known and used in academic studies of various sciences. Among such sciences is that of Islamic jurisprudence. Scholars of the past and present have been concerned with exploring the approaches or methods of Ijtihad of many mujtahidin to understand the methodological principles that a mujtahid has used in the process of jurisprudence branching. Therefore, the trend of using induction method and analyzing the approaches of mujtahidin is worth researching. In this context, this study aims at examining the method of a great mujtahid in Islam, the Egyptian Imam, Laith ibn Saad. To achieve this purpose, the study primarily utilized various methods. The inductive method was used to trace the Imam's opinions, related to his approach of Ijtihad. The deductive method was used to study the quoted branches of Imam Laith, inferring what could be considered as his approach of Ijtihad, to which he has committed himself in branching jurisprudence. The descriptive method was used to classify and arrange what had been deduced according to the various categories or divisions of the science of jurisprudence. In the comparative method, several comparisons between Imam Laith method of Ijtihad and those of other scholars were conducted through presenting issues and related scholars' opinions. The researcher has also shown the most prominent characteristics that distinguish al-Laith's method from those of other scholars. It is found that the Imam has an integrated approach of Ijtihad, where he explains the general features, distributed on the various categories of jurisprudence, through his opinions on the topics of this science. Recommendations are offered for further research in order to conduct more in-depth studies on the Imam's character or to enrich some aspects of the current study.
