Summary: | This study aims to discover the learning strategies used by non-native speakers of Arabic at CELPAD, IIUM and the students' rationale for using those strategies during the completion of three different speaking tasks. The study was conducted on two male students and two female students in the speaking skill subject, LQS 0415 Division of the Quranic Language for Semester 2, 2010/2011. This study was based on field research where the researcher applied three language tasks on the samples and examined these strategies in three stages (preparation, presentation and evaluation). Meanwhile, the type of the study was qualitative where the researcher relied on two research instruments; peaking strategies checklist and individual interview. The study concludes that these students used six strategies in speaking; memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective and social but they did not use direct strategies; memory, cognitive and compensation in the last stage of the process. It is because direct strategies are only suitable at the preparation and presentation stages. Meanwhile, the students used indirect strategies; metacognitive, affective and social in all stages. In viewing the results of this study, the researcher suggests that learners of Arabic as a second language pay attention to the diversity in using all strategies to improve their performance during the completion of different language tasks. |
