This study also finds out the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation among the Malaysian in-service English teachers towards teaching English language. The differences between motivation of teachers based on teacher's characteristics such as gender, age and teaching experience were also be investigated. The participants consisted of experienced Malaysian in-service English teachers who are currently doing their undergraduate degrees in the distant learning mode at the IIUM. English is the language of global economy and the most widely learned second language in the world. As students learning depends upon effective teaching hence knowing the factors that help in the enhancement of teachers motivation is of at most importance. The study employed a quantitative research design as a means of data gathering. The questionnaire used for data collection was adapted from the body of literature on motivation among English language teachers to teach English (Kassabgy et al., 2001; Yau, 2010). The items were categorized into subscales: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The researcher employed both descriptive and inferential statistics in the analysis of the collected data. The findings of this study reveal that Malaysian in-service English teachers are generally motivated to teach English. There was statistically significant difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation among the Malaysian in-service teachers towards teaching English language. Overall motivation was affected by gender and age. There was significant difference in in-service English teachers' extrinsic motivation towards teaching English language according to gender and age. Female teachers had slightly higher extrinsic motivation compared to male teachers. Teachers aged 41-50 were significantly more motivated to teach English for extrinsic reason. The findings of the study may have significant implications on the Malaysian policy and system of education and its teacher training programmes. | ||
