520 |a The Malay language has borrowed many Arabic words in many areas of life as a result of the spread of the Arabic language in the Malay Archipelago since the first century of the Islamic calendar. A number of studies have been done to quantify the size of Arabic loan words in Malay and they range between 1300 – 2000 words. These words have become entrenched in the minds of the Malays. Thus, most Malays believe they are originally Malay words. With this in mind, researchers in contrastive analysis and Arabic vocabulary suggest making use of these words in learning the Arabic language in order to encourage Malay students to learn Arabic by using words that they are familiar with. However, some studies suggest that using of loan words in teaching a second language can be a double-edged weapon. Therefore, this study aims to discover the lexical processing strategies used by Malay beginner students in inferring meanings of Arabic loan words and their effectiveness in word comprehension. The study is based on a qualitative approach, by using a retrospective interview in order to identify what is going on in the minds of students when they encounter Arabic loan words in both instructions, listening and reading. The study found that the students were able to recognize and understand most of the target words. Lexical knowledge of L1 was the most frequently used source, showing that they were heavily relying on phonological and orthographic similarity of words in both languages. In addition, they also used other knowledge sources such as syntagmatic relations, world knowledge and morphological knowledge. The study also discovered a new source under the L1 sources which is 'Malay lexical meaning'. Results also indicate that reading resulted in greater recognition and comprehension of the loan words than listening.
