520 | |a The major research objective is to analyze and compare the ethnic, religious and ideological viewpoints expressed in the short stories and novels of three Hui writers selected as representatives of these viewpoints respectively. The thesis focuses on the problems of the diversity and acomplexity of the Hui people as reflected in their literary works. The methodology of this study consists of relevant library research and a close reading of the texts as prelude to the discussion of the themes of the works and conclusions drawn by this researcher based on critical reflection and evaluation. Ther three Hui writers all belong to the Hui renaissance period in the late 1950's when China began to open up to the outside world. There's a survey of the dynastic evolution of the Hui people in Chinese history. The thesis stresses the historical acknowledgement for the nationality status by the government in the 1950's, which is also the historical momentum for the Hui literature. There is also a survey of the Hui literature history both in its folklore and literati literature. Two Hui writers' works, which are contradictory to each other in their ethnic and religious viewpoints, are studied. Zhang Chengzhi has a series of Hui short stories and an important novel The Heart's History, advocating the religious spirit. Huo Da, on the contrary, demonstrates her clear attitude in negating Islam so far as the Hui people and their lives are concerned. All her ideas can be seen in her novel, Funeral of the Muslims. Another discussion centers around Bai Xianyong whose popular works are not based on the Hui culture. His representative work is Taibey Characters. He inherits the great tradition of Chinese literature. Supportive examples are giiven, and some Hui writers in history are compared with him. The main findings of the thesis are that the Hui literature should be regarded as an independent ethnic literature from the Han Chinese literature in spite of its diversity and complexity, and that the burgeoning Hui literature has its great significance in the Hui renaissance in contemporary China. | ||
