520 |a This study analyses the thought and contribution of Uman Mitsutaro Yamaoka (1980-1959), the first Japanese pilgrim, towards spreading Islam in Japan. In particular, it examines the formation and transformation of his thoughtm, his conversion to Islam, and his effort to combine Islam with the Japanese traditional qand values in promoting dakwah activities. Mistutaro Yamaoka is chosen because of his numerous activities abnd effective contributions to Islamic Da'wah in Japan. The study is based on the textual analysis of Mitsutaro Yamaoka's books and interviews with some of Yamaokia's disciplines. It found that Yamaokka stressed: 1. The necessity of maintaining good relations between japanese and non-Japanese Muslims. 2. The importance of showing the similarities between Islamic practices and some Japanese rules and traditions. 3. The use of local language to impart laws of Islamic teaching to the Japanese Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
