Summary:The purpose of this study is to determine the methods applied for teaching and to identify the weaknesses of the students in the learning of Arabic language. The population of this study consisted of 21 Arabic teachers and 374 form two students from four secondary schools in the state of Malacca . The descriptive and evaluative methods had been applied. The instrument used for collecting data was a close-ended written questionnaire for teachers comprised of 15 items which was organized into four categories: personal, nature of work, courses attended and methodology. The instrument for students comprised of 9 items which was divided into two parts: personal data and student's opinion. Beside that, interview, observation and proficiency test in Arabic language were also conducted. The data were analyzed using frequency counts, means and percentages. In addition, the Cronbach Formula was used to measure the reliability of the instrument. The study showed that a majority of the Arabic teachers used the translation and grammatical method in teaching Arabic language. It did not achieve the purpose of communication. Some Arabic teachers have low level proficiency in Arabic language especially those who have not attended course in the teaching of Arab language during services. The study also showed the students have low level proficiency in Arabic language after one year learning Arabic because they lack of vocabularies and faced the problems in writing.
