520 | |a This study examines the effect of ground colour on memory performance. Most of the past researches on colour-memory relationship focus on the colour of the figure rather than the background. This study extends on the previous works on background colour and how it affects memory performance based on recall rate. Based on past literatures, colour has the potential to attract attention and cause emotional arousal which later can increase memory performance. Ninety undergraduate students participated in this study which used the between group experimental design. There were three experimental conditions; coloured background, non-coloured background and mixed background. Fifty geometrical shapes were used as experimental stimuli with the measurement of 4.74cm x 3.39cm (figure) and 19cm x 25cm (background). The experiment consisted of two phases; the study phase and the test phase. The participants were presented with the 50 geometrical shapes in the study phase and their memory performance was measured based on the number of shapes that were recalled in the test phase. The result indicates that there was significant differences between the three experimental conditions on memory performance. Non-coloured background condition reported higher recall rate than the two other conditions. However, coloured background condition was marked by a slightly higher hit rate compared to non-coloured background condition. There were a few factors that contributed to the current finding including the effect of encoding specificity principle, the level of contrast, and the cross-cultural issues. | ||
