Description
Summary:Student empowerment has become one of the central issues in some educational debates. There are several different concepts of student empowerment. This study attempts to look at student empowerment from the critical pedagogical perspective because many elements in this perspective are compatible with some Islamic principles. The critical pedagogical concept of student empowerment aims to develop students' ability to critically comprehend the world and make them involved in the society in order to achieve social justice. Interviews were conducted among postgraduate students in the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) to examine whether their understanding of student empowerment is similar to the critical pedagogical notion of empowerment. The findings indicate that students have only a partial understanding of such a notion of student empowerment. Therefore, it is suggested that Islamic universities such as IIUM should implement programmes that encourage this type of student empowerment.
