Summary: | This research aims to shed light on how to transfer the idiomatic expressions that are embroidered with deep cultural roots, and are not understood according to the lexical vocabulary, which makes the process of translating them rather problematic to ensure correct transfer of what is carried by the idiomatic expressions of the semantic, rhetorical and cultural characteristics. To achieve this goal, the research tries to study the Arabic idiomatic expressions in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, which has been translated into Malay by Adib Bisri Musthofa. The research divides this study into two main aspects; First, the theoretical aspect, where it discusses the concept of the idiomatic expressions, its relationship to rhetoric and culture, and discusses the tendencies and theories of translation as it points to both linguistic and cultural aspects of the Arabic and Malay languages, the uses of the idiomatic expressions in both languages, and ends by providing some proposed methods to be translated. The other aspect sheds interest in the extraction of the most idiomatic expressions contained in this Ṣaḥīḥ, classifies them according to semantic fields, describes the approaches and methods used by the translator to translate these idiomatic expressions into Malay, and analyzes the most important patterns according to the steps used by the researcher to provide alternative mechanisms and proposals in translating this linguistic phenomenon. The research depends on three major approaches; namely inductive approach, descriptive approach, and analytical approach. The research found that the free translation of the idiomatic expressions done by the translator had taken a large part. The research also discovered that the translation of the Arabic idiomatic expressions into Malay experiences problems inherent in expressions that carry the special Arabic cultural specificities which impede the process of effectively translating them into Malay. |
