520 |a One of the learning problems encountered by Arabic language learners is the reading problem of identifying meaning of unfamiliar words. Therefore, this study aims to investigate types of word meaning inferencing employed by Arabic language learners at both levels: beginner and advanced. It also explores the extent of their success in inferencing as well as identifies differences between beginner and advanced students in inferencing meaning from context. Ten university students from both levels participated in this qualitative study by performing reading tasks on selected Arabic texts. Data were gathered through think-aloud protocols and retrospective interviews. Findings reveal that most of the students tended to use sentence level inference compared to word and discourse levels for text comprehension. Meanwhile, translation is the most preferred linguistic source to infer word meaning from context. The study also reveals that most of the subjects succeeded in inferencing target words effectively. For differences between the two levels, advanced students used world knowledge more frequently compared to the beginners who were more prone to using sentence meaning and syntagmatic relation.
