520 | |a This study aimed to examine how students of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) use the English modal verbs must and might in their writings and speeches. It focused on respondents who were Malaysian third- and fourth- year students pursuing a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature. The data colletion process was conducted from 1st April 2018 to 31st August 2018, from which 40 written and 20 verbal essays by the respondents were gathered. The two modal verbs chosen were examined based on Huffman's (1989) scale of probability, which prescribed that the modal verb must bears higher probability of something happening, while might has a lower probability of something to happen. Based on the findings, it can be stated clearly that the respondents understood the probability and usage of must and might. All of them used the two modal verbs correctly according to the designed probabilities, meanings and usages in either in their written or verbal essays. This showed their ability to fully comprehend the meanings and usage of the modal verb must and might. The findings of this study can help to improve students' writing and improve their mastery of the English language, specifically in the use of modal verbs. Furthermore, teachers will also be able to design a more comprehensive lesson plan to aid students in their lesson. | ||
