Summary:The present study aims to explore the properties of strategic planning and to what extent this planning is practiced in educational institutions in the Sultanate of Oman. It investigates how far internal capabilities of these institutions are considered when writing the strategic plan and its goals as well as to what extent the plan of evaluating employees' work in educational institutions takes into account their actual performance when implementing the strategic planning from the interviewees' perspective. The study explores the challenges facing strategic planning and if there are statistically significant differences to the level of practice in the educational institutions in the Sultanate attributed to the variables of gender, qualifications, and years of experience. The study uses qualitative analytical approach (mixed approach), distributing a survey for (275) individual and interviewing (10) director generals from various governmental institutions. The results revealed that the expectations of the sample of individuals about the practice of strategic planning in the educational institutions in the Sultanate as a whole were almost high in contrast with their expectations about the real practice which ranged between medium and high scores. The survey showed that the expectations of the individuals about the properties of strategic planning scored high as well as the obvious difference in handling the internal capabilities available in the educational institutions when writing the strategic plan and its goals from the interviewees' perspective. The results of the study declared some differences in the plan of evaluating employees' work in educational institutions taking into account their actual performance when implementing the strategic planning from the interviewees' perspective. The individuals' expectations about the challenges of strategic planning in the Omani educational institutions were high for every challenge. According to the results, there are no statistically significant differences to the level of practice in the Omani educational institutions attributed to the variables of gender, qualifications, and years of experience. There have been obvious differences to the level of practice of strategic planning for low qualified employees with no bachelor's degree. The study recommended some suggestions to enhance the level of strategic planning in the Omani educational institutions to obtain sustainable development.
