520 |a Phyllanthus niruri sp. is traditionally consumed by the Malaysian as an alternative for diabetes mellitus (DM) treatment. However, the claims for the scientific findings are scarcely found. The rising statistic number of diabetic patient has been really worrying nowadays. The increasing number of diabetic patients leads to the high demand of the drugs and medications. However, a long term use of them results in negative side effects and worst, not safely consumed. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the antidiabetic potential of one of the natural source in Malaysia, the P.niruri extracts. Methanol and water extracts were collected by using Soxhlet extraction and heat under reflux method, respectively. Following a toxicity study, antidiabetic effect was identified in vivo in streptozotocin-induced diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats. Blood serums were collected to analyse the lipid profile, liver profile and urea profile. The histopathological studies were conducted using liver, kidney and pancreatic tissue. The toxicity test revealed that the plant is non-toxic and safely consumed up to 2000mg/kg dosage. The 200mg/kg dosage of aqueous extract showed favourable decrease in the blood glucose test and increase in body weight compared to the methanol extract. Histology studies revealed the regeneration of Islet of Langerhans, thickening of glomerulus membrane in 200mg/kg dosage of aqueous extract treated rat. In conclusion, the 200mg/kg aqueous extract showed favourable antidiabetic properties compared to the methanol extract. The findings demonstrated that P.niruri aqueous extract could be a potential source in diabetes management and contribute to the use of natural product as alternatives.
