Description
Summary:This research examines Syed Sheikh Al-Hadi's educational reform as his response to modernity in Malaya. The emergence of modernity in Malaya was a direct result of the British occupation. This research provides a brief historical background of the emergence of modernity in Malaya and its political, socioeconomical and educational effects on the Malay community. There have been various responses among the Malays to modernity in Malaya. While most of them rejected the notion of modernity, Syed Sheikh Al-Hadi sought a reconciliation between religion and modernity through his educational reform. This research focuses on the selected issues related to educational concern in the Malay community during Syed Sheikh Al-Hadi's lifetime. Among the issues highlighted are the role of reason as opposite to blind imitation (taqlīd), the elimination of superstition (khurafat) and innovation (bidʻah), the establishment of the madrasah system, and the importance of knowledge and education for the Malay women. This research employs a historical method where it discussed about the emergence of modernity in Malaya under the British occupation, and is descriptive in nature where it introduces the bibliographical sketch of Syed Sheikh Al-Hadi. However, it also employs an analytical method in discussing Syed Sheikh Al-Hadi's approaches to educational reform. It is found that Syed Sheikh Al-Hadi has contributed remarkably to the progress and development of the Malays in Malaya through his educational reform. This research particularly highlights his role in the establishment of the madrasah system, his emphasis on the role of reason and ijtihÉd, and his emphasis on the importance of education for Malay women.
