Description
Summary:This thesis aims to demonstrate and evaluate Shaikh AbulHasan Ali Al-Nadawi's contribution to the Islamisation of Arabic language and literature. Shaikh Al-Nadawi played an important role in the Islamisation process of Arabic language and literature. He suggested that the non Arab Muslims should be taught an Islamic Arabic language that is made up of the Qur'anic and Islamic terminologies and clear, concise vocabulary. Its style should be modern, with an Islamic tone. He considers language as dynamic, which is not bound by any specific style or syntactical structure. According to him it is a great obstacle for development of a language if it closes its doors for idioms, phrases and style of modern developed languages. A language reaches to Islamic standard when perfect emotion, honesty, devotional love and Islamic sprit is added to it. He thinks this Islamic Arabic language could be cultivated through the process of education. This should be done by creating attractive and high quality text books that make students aware of different styles of Arabic. 'Allamah N adawi is the first advocate of Islamisation of literature and is recognized as the pioneer of Islamic literature movement. In the forties of this century he first called for Islamisation of literature and presented some principles and philosophical bases on which the foundation of Islamic literature could be built. For him it is not necessary that literary work would only be produced by the so-called professional writers, rather any writer can create such literature. For him, natural and live literature is built on reality, pure enthusiasm and Iman. It is the product of the heart, blended with love and infused with faith. This is opposed to what he calls a "dead-wood" literature, which is charaterised by artificiality, pretense and efforts to earn fame, money and woldly success. 'Allamah Nadawi has succeeded in Islamizing Arabic language and literature. Many of his works have been adopted as text books for teaching Arabic as a second language in many schools and institutions in India and abroad. His works have also been accepted by many Muslim literateurs who established "Universal League of Islamic Literature". They honoured 'Allamah Nadawi for his contribution by appointing him as the chairman of the league for life.
