Description
Summary:People with hearing disability have unique educational and social needs. However, these needs remain unmet because lack of awareness among society and authorities which eventually may affect their education, social interaction, and quality of life. Therefore, this research aimed to explore the educational and social needs, the reasons behind these unmet needs, and the consequences of unmet educational and social needs on the quality of life of young adults with hearing disability in Kabul city. A qualitative research method specifically, the phenomenological approach was adopted to perform this research. An in-depth semi-structured interview was used to interview ten participants. Overall, fourteen themes and twenty-seven sub-themes were derived from thematic analysis. Three themes were identified as educational needs, including good quality of education system for students with hearing disability, qualities of great teachers, and the right of access to better education, and two themes explained social needs that include social support from family members and people in the surroundings, and sense of belonging. In addition, three themes described the reasons for the unmet educational needs such as financial constraint of the government, the right to education is not prioritized by the government, and school curriculum and syllabus are not tailored to the needs of students with hearing disability. Moreover, two themes explained the reasons for the unmet social needs such as not being engaged in the society and inadequate information related to an individual with hearing disability. Furthermore, facing obstacles and barriers in acquiring the good quality of life, and considering the consequences of unmet educational needs as a challenge to improve themselves are identified as the themes of the consequences of unmet educational needs on quality of life. Besides that, to illustrate the consequences of unmet social needs on quality of life, two themes were acknowledged such as decreasing life satisfaction and loneliness. These findings indicated that some factors may influence people with hearing disability positively such as teacher's characteristics, teacher-student interpersonal relationships, developing essential skills, providing a conducive learning environment, positive society attitude, and social support. Meanwhile, insufficient educational services, lack of awareness among authorities and communities, financial burden and social isolation are the factors negatively influencing educational and social needs of young adults with hearing disability. The major source of limitation in this study was due to lack of official data regarding people with hearing disability in the Afghanistan context, hardly availability of sign language interpreters and cultural constraints, for female participants. This research is useful in raising awareness among society, and governmental authorities about the educational and social needs of people with hearing disability, and it may help the Ministry of Education, and Higher Education to reconstruct the curriculum according to the needs of people with hearing disability. Finally, future research is needed to investigate other needs of people with hearing disability.
