Therefore, people with visual disability experienced some difficulties in their education and employment. However limited studies are available in this regard in the context of Afghanistan. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the educational and employment needs, the reasons behind the unmet needs, and finally the challenges faced by people with visual disability as consequences of unmet needs. The phenomenological approach was employed to obtain rich data based on the participants' experience. In-depth semi-structured interviews were performed with fourteen participants aged between 20-40 years using semi-structured questions. The interviewed data were transcribed, translated, and analyzed based on thematic analysis. The findings of this study revealed fourteen emerging themes and thirty sub-themes that produced evidence of the unique participant's experiences. Five themes explained about the educational needs that include teaching and learning materials for effective and productive learning, adequate educational facilities in the school, vital skills development, teacher good ethos, social support from significant people. In addition, three themes described the employment needs such as equipped with essential skills to be a competent worker, support from employers and society, encouragement and support from family members and those involved in advocacy of the visually disabled. Moreover, four themes explain the reasons for unmet needs such as policies and issues of the educational system, governmental factors, absence of national employment policies for people with visual disability, economic crisis. Finally, two themes explain the challenges faced by people with visual disability as the consequences of unmet needs like quality of life is affected and unmotivated to be successful in various aspects of life. These findings suggested that several factors play a very positive role for participants in order to obtain their education and to secure for a job. The findings may also provide insights to the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Higher Education to provide better education and the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs, and Disabled to provide job opportunities to people with visual disability. Some limitations were acknowledged such as the participants recruitment for the interview and the school timing. This is desirable for future work that a similar study should be done in other provinces of Afghanistan. | ||
