520 |a This research identifies the role of Islam in shaping the national identity of Azerbaijanis. The study uses the constructivist methodology to find the relationship between the state and the people to elucidate the role of Islam in the shaping of national identity that evolved from Pan-Islamism to Turkism and then to Azerbaijanism. The research also examines leading intellectuals and leaders of Azerbaijan such as Ahmad Bey Ağaoğlu, Ali Bey Huseynzadeh and Mammad Amin Rasulzade. Furthermore, the thesis specifically looked at the national ideology of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) and the reasons for the fall of the ADR. The study discovered that Islam had an ultimate influence over the process of shaping the national identity of Azerbaijanis that revealed through analyses of the political events. The study also concluded that Turkism had an influence on some representatives of Azerbaijani intelligentsia and was reflected in the strip of blue colour on the flag of the ADR as designed by Ali Bey Huseynzadeh. However, it had not taken deep roots among the people and did not have a massive impact on the national ideology of the ADR. The research also discovered that the main reason for the fall of the ADR was the military intervention of Soviet Russia and that Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh's Azerbaijanism as the final step of the evolutionary stairs of the identity of Azerbaijanis could not prevent the Eleventh Red Army's invasion. Nevertheless, Rasulzadeh's Azerbaijanism left a significant influence on the ordinary people including socialists.
