Description
Summary:Inculcating values is an important element of education to produce a good man for future generation. Therefore, it is very important to instil the values from a young age, like strike the iron while it's still hot. This study aims to inculcate Islamic values in Year 4 students via mathematical problem solving, explore changes in terms of values that students perceive, and investigate if the improved problem-solving skills from the problem-solving method of teaching influence students’ values and morality. Students’ mathematical achievement was also examined. The case study method with pre-experimental design was implemented in this research. The researcher employed both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis in this study. The data were collected using observation checklists, questionnaires, and interview protocols. Data was also collected through field notes. The sample of this study consist of 39 grade 4 students from an Islamic School in Selangor, and 3 observers from among the Islamic School management and the lecturers from a particular university. The findings of this study show that students have a solid understanding of the subjects, scoring about 80%. However, the gain from intervention was only minor and was not statistically significant. The findings from the written test, interview, and observation, suggest that pupils learned about many other aspects in the classroom such as thinking and reasoning skill, as well as collaboration and communication skills, which improve their attitude. Meanwhile, both their written test and interview seemed to imply their awareness of Allah’s reward if they do righteous acts of decency. Finally, the transcription of the interview revealed that students, on the whole, agree that collaborative problem solving is a great approach to learn. The researcher proposed using the lesson study strategy as a means for teachers to produce more meaningful lessons. Since the success of the research, is contingent on the teacher factor. To achieve better results regarding the relationship between the method used and its influence on the students' mathematical understanding, future research may extend the period of the intervention and observation, in addition to having quasi-experimental research design and more respondents.
