520 | |a This thesis aims to identify local people’s perceptions on the Klang River before and after the development of River of Life (ROL) as well as their interactions with the ROL in Masjid Jamek area. This study intends to understand how people’s interactions with waterfront affect their sense of place towards the river. The Klang River Basin has experienced rapid development and land changes over the years. Specifically, half of the basin has been developed for residential, agricultural, infrastructure and utilities purposes like recreational, communal, commercial, industrial and transportation. As a result, the river became polluted and had changed its water quality. It also has threatened people-place interactions and ruined the quality of views of the Klang River. The Government of Malaysia initiated the ROL project, the economic transformation program which mainly focused on rejuvenating the Klang River including cleaning, beautification and land development. The project is considered as one of the redevelopments of urban public spaces since it is freely accessible to the public and intended for economic, social, leisure and outdoor activities. An in-depth interview was the primary data collection technique, supplemented by participant observation. The interviews were conducted with 20 informants who have stayed or worked in the Masjid Jamek area for more than 10 years since 2009. The results indicate that the Blue Pool serves as a space for leisure, entertainment and tourism, as most informants have shared their own engagement with the place and visitors who can be seen regularly in the river area. The waterfront area is considered as beneficial for informants’ physical and psychological well-being. The results also signify that waterfront development in Masjid Jamek area had revived and strengthened informants’ emotional feelings towards the river. Visual qualities of the Klang River became one of the important indicators which evoked their sense of place. Overall, this study provides readers with an understanding of waterfront development and how it impacts people’s sense of place, which can further promote urban planners to comprehensively plan for sustainable urban public space like waterfront. The measures suggested by the informants are also necessary for the relevant authorities to maintain and preserve the waterfront, and Klang River which have been stated in the concluding chapter. This thesis makes contributions to theoretical and empirical scholarships in urban and environmental anthropology, particularly in understanding human intricate connections with river places. | ||
