520 | |a National mental health services are widened to include the community-based paradigm that centralises community involvement in prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of the service user. Despite the aims to alleviate the nation’s current mental health state, a previously conducted systematic literature review suggested several knowledge gaps on the current implementation of Community Mental Health Centre (CMHC) in Malaysia. One of the main providers in Malaysia that adopted this paradigm is the nationwide Pusat Kesihatan Mental Masyarakat (Mentari; CMHC). Through the qualitative approach, this study attempts to identify the perceived challenges and/or barriers, coping strategies, and facilitating factors for CMHC service delivery by exploring the on-the-ground occupational experiences of mental healthcare service providers (N = 8). The data were collated through semi-structured in-depth interviews with respondents involved in the management, planning, and/or service delivery in two CMHCs. Respondents are service providers consisting of a psychiatrist (n = 1), medical officer of psychiatry (n = 1), nurses (n = 3), occupational therapist (n = 1), and assistant medical officers (n = 2). The interview sessions undertook between 40 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes per personnel. The audio-taped sessions were transcribed and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) guidelines, and the themes were systematically elicited. Four superordinate themes were extracted and mapped: struggles and complexities, constant initiatives, inclusive operations, and quality and sustainability. The findings of this study are mapped to the current CMHC policy practice published by the government and are discussed in parallel with the current evidence in the literature of the CMHC. The discussion includes the clinical implications of this study and potential exploration for future research. | ||
