Description
Summary:This research aims to reveal the errors of translation from English into Arabic in the Arab world, with an explanation of the theoretical side of translation quality in order to identify errors in the field of literary translation. Translating books in our Arab world is still behind that of the developed nations and unfortunately there are still shortcomings which might lead to loss of confidence in the translations. Among the literary works translated into Arabic is the international novel (The Old Man and the Sea) by Ernest Hemingway. The study would make an analytical study of three Arabic translations of this novel, while cross-referring them with the original text and explaining the errors that the three translators committed: omissions, additions, mistranslation of meaning from the original text to the target text, and language errors in the target text. The researcher will provide a quality translation to the text. Among the notable findings of the study is that a translator (h) had omitted many relevant terms and sentences of the original text and inserted new sentence compositions into the new novel. Hence, the translator has committed a grave mistake of deviating from the objective of the original text. Another translator (z) has perpetrated errors in omission, addition and transmission of wrong sentences composition. Similarly, translator (q), although of a lesser degree, has also committed similar errors in transmitting and drafting the new novel. The researcher observed that the three translators have diverged from the real essence of the original text because they have compromised the consistency and harmonious thought of the text. Consequently, the current study shows the inadequacies found in the works of translators (h) and (z). In contrast, despite earlier mistakes, the translator (q)'s version is adequate and appropriate for further content improvement
