Description
Summary:Commercial open source software (COSS) companies attract researchers’ and practitioners’ attention because of their unique capabilities to provide high-quality software products at an affordable price to individuals, small businesses, private, and public institutions. However, despite some prominent COSS companies enjoying huge success, many COSS companies are struggling. Moreover, the unavailability of success models and lack of standard of measurement to evaluate the success of these companies is worrisome. In addition, even though previous findings in similar industries underscore the importance of intellectual capital and software quality for companies to succeed, a review of the literature shows that both intellectual capital and software quality are under-researched in the COSS company context. Therefore, the study aims to assess the direct and indirect relationships among critical knowledge-based resources (i.e., intellectual capital components) that is relational capital, structural capital, human capital, software quality, and COSS company success. To this end, the study adopts knowledge management theory focusing on intellectual capital and software quality influencing COSS companies’ success. Thus, to achieve the research objectives the study takes a postpositivist path to research. Specifically, the study uses a quantitative explanatory design that is befitting of the postpositivist perspective. Furthermore, data were collected through a structured selfadministered survey and analysed using SmartPLS 3. The results indicate that relational capital has a direct positive impact on the success of COSS companies. Additionally, intellectual capital components show an interactive relationship amongst themselves and with software quality. Moreover, software quality directly influences the success of COSS companies. In addition to the direct impact on COSS companies' success, software quality plays a mediating role between intellectual capital components and COSS company success.
