The inherent scalability and better de-correlation properties of DWT allow DWT to outperform DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) in terms of subjective image quality for image and video compression. However, the high memory and processing requirements for 2-D DWT computation inhibit the widespread deployment of DWT for practical image and video processing systems.
