Summary:As an economy continues to grow, the role of the service industry becomes more important in economic development. One industry in the service sector that had experienced tremendous growth over the last four decades is the insurance industry. This study contributes to knowledge enhancement in several ways. First, it identified the important macroeconomic factors of short term and long term general insurance consumption. Second, it establishes important role of insurance sector in relation to economic development measured by GDP. Third, it allows better understanding of causality relationship among macroeconomic factors, general insurance and economic development.
