Performance of different earthing configurations under high impulse conditions

The effectiveness of earthing systems is a major concern in today‘s power system applications. Earthing system is very important for an electrical installation system as stated in BS 7671, MS IEC 60364, IEEE Std 81-2012 and IEEE Std 802000; as it provides the necessary protection for the public from...

Earthing system is very important for an electrical installation system as stated in BS 7671, MS IEC 60364, IEEE Std 81-2012 and IEEE Std 802000; as it provides the necessary protection for the public from electrical hazards. Thus, earthing systems has become part of the requirement in many electrical systems to provide safety and to ensure high currents flow to an earthing system effectively. The issues of understanding the effect of remote earth, effectivess of configurations and effect of critical electric field, Ec must be understood clearly when conducting high impulse experiments on earthing system. The field tests on earthing system under high impulse conditions as stated in IEEE 81-2012 require a remote earth (RE) to carry the return current to the impulse generator (IG) and the other equipment via earth electrode under test. However, there has not been much emphasis on the design of remote earth with respect to the electrode under test. High impulse tests carried out using two (2) types of reference remote earths in this study, showed various characteristic of time, voltage traces, current traces and impulse resistances, R impulse. These revealed that emphasis must be placed on the remote earth when the tests are performed under high impulse conditions by field measurements. 2019-01 Thesis http://shdl.mmu.edu.my/7721/ http://library.mmu.edu.my/library2/diglib/mmuetd/ masters Multimedia University Faculty of Engineering
