Summary:A study on machining properties of Sesendok and Teak were carried out. A comparison between them were made. Two timber species namely Sesendok (Endospermum malacense) and Teak (Fectona grandis) were used in this study. The timbers were obtained from FRIM plantation plot. 20 samples for each species have been prepared for each test. Six types of machining test have been carried out, namely planing, boring, mortising, shaping, sanding and turning test. All the tests were carried out according to the procedure as stipulated in ASTM D1666-64. Simple mean method analysis was used to analyze a series of data obtained from the visual observation result. The assessment of the result were based on the grades of machined surface quality. Overall results showed that Teak give better quality of machined surface than Sesendok. This is the reason made Teak one of the most popular species for furniture material. From the study, it was concluded that density and grain orientation is the most affecting factors to the machining properties of the timbers.
