Overweight and obesity are major public health problems and the most common nutritional disorders. The main objective of this was to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity and their associations with their associations with dietary habits among Libyan community in Malaysia.A cross-sectional study was conducted on 300 participants.Data were collected during the period of 9 July to September 2013.Participants were asked to fill in a standard questionnaire. The majority of the sampled participants (70.0%) were of normal weight (80% of female and 60% of males). The prevalence rates of overweight and obesity among Libyan community in Malaysia were 20.3% and 4.6% respectively. Furthermore, overweight and obesity were more common among male participants compared to females (27.3% and 6% vs. 13.3% and 3.3%, respectively). The prevalence of abdominal obesity among participants was 17.6% and was more common among female participants (22.6%) in comparison to males (12.6%). The participants obesity group consumed ~1600kg more food energy per day than did their overweight group. This increase in weight was primarily due to an increase in the consumption of carbohydrate and fat.Similarity, found that obesity in women consumed 2000 kg more food energy per day than did overweight women compared with men which found 2500 kg more energy per day. The prevalence rates of participants practice sports more common among male (overweight and obesity) compared to female (67.3%, 47.3%, vs 59.3%, 68.5%). According to results obtained, it can be concluded that overweight and obesity are a problem among Libyan community in Malaysia. |
