Summary: | This study examines the significance of colours in the Holy Quran and its impact on the learning process. Most previous studies have addressed the study of colour in terms of Qur'anic studies and more concentrated in the analysis based on the interpretation of the tafsir scholars. As this study emphasize into the field of cognitive psychology through the study of the effect of background colour on memory performance based on the call rate, which intend to improve the capability of student memorization in the religious subject which is using Arabic language. Based on previous studies shows that warm colour have the ability to attract attention, and create emotional arousal that lead to increased memory performance. Ninety six students from standard two and four in non-governmental Religious School in Hilir Perak, participated in this experiment which was separated into one control group (normal background colour) and two experimental groups (warm background colour and cool background colour). The experiment consisted of two phases; study phase and the test phase. In study phase, they were given the interpretation of eight Arabic words from selected surah on their syllabus and then they were asked to memorize it within sixteen minutes, and their performance were measured based on the number of words that were recall in the test phase. These experiments were repeated three times; pre-test, post-test, and retention test, which gave different materials in each test. The data was analyzed using Paired Sample t-test for normal data and Wilcoxon for non-normal data using SPSS. The results show there was significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores which show that all background colour influence memory performance. On the other hand, the analysis between pre test and retention test scores show that there were no significant differences in warm background colour, and normal background colour, but show the significance difference in cold background colour. This analysis shows that, the warm background colour does not influence memory performance like the previous studies. |
