Summary: | Rehabilitating inmates and preparing them to return to their communities as good individuals are considered as the main goal of prisons and punitive policy as a whole. With the increasing number of recidivists in Palestine during the last five years, according to statistical reports issued by the official authorities of the country, the research problem stems from here. It seeks to monitor the effect of correctional institution environment on recidivists and to identify the actual reasons of recidivism; as well as the amount of progress to achieve the desired goals of its preventive and correctional programs, which are in the interest of realizing social integration for the inmate in the environment of the institution in which they are placed and then in the outside community, by examining the level of implementation of correctional programs and psychological and social adjustment in reform and rehabilitation centers in the governorates of southern Palestine from the perspective of recidivists. In addition, it explores the impact of correctional programs on the psychological and social adjustment of the research sample. Therefore, this study aims to identify the level of implementation of reform programs from the perspective of recidivists in the southern governorates of Palestine and to identify their level of psychological and social adjustment, as well as exploring the impact of correctional programs on psychological and social adjustment. The researcher used the descriptive correlational method in his study. To achieve the research objectives, the researcher administered a questionnaire to measure the level of reform programs designed by Dr. Fawzi bin Yahya Hakami and a questionnaire to measure the level of psychological and social adjustment designed by Hume Bell. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were verified using expert validity and structural and internal consistency. It was then applied on a pilot sample of 30 individuals from the research population. The research population consisted of 620 recidivists in reform and rehabilitation centers in the southern governorates. The research sample was selected from among the inmates with a simple random technique, which was then analyzed using two statistical package programs (SPSS, AMOS). The sample was 237 recidivists, which represented the main sample of the current study. The results of the study showed a high level of implementation of the employed reform programs from the perspective of the recidivists, with a relative weight of 73.6%. The results also showed a low level of psychological and social adjustment among the recidivists. The research results showed the significant effect of reform programs on psychological and social adjustment at a rate of 12.3%, as well as the significant effect of the variable of age and variable of education level as confounding variables on the relationship between the scale of correctional programs and the scale of psychological and social adjustment. On the other hand, the results showed that there was no significant effect of the variable of marital status and sentence period as confounding variables on the relationship between the scale of correctional programs and the scale of psychological and social adjustment. |
