Description
Summary:PTSD results from terrifying and disturbing events. Traumas can also affect the stability and safety of a community and its members. This study discusses the implementation of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in counselling sessions to relieve PTSD and symptoms of depression among adults: a case study of migrants in the province of Istanbul, Turkey. This study aims to determine the effect of EMDR on relieving PTSD and depression; to determine the outcome of EMDR therapy differs by gender, age, and nationality; to examine the effect of EMDR in alleviating depression; and to determine whether relieving PTSD stress would alleviate depression. The study employed the quasi-experimental and clinical approaches to achieve the research objectives. The research sample was 20 cases attending the psychological centres named in the research: Eshraqat Center for Psychological Support, Liannaka Insan Center for Psychological Support, and International University for Renewal in Istanbul. The results indicated that first, there were significant differences between measures of PTSD and depression before and after EMDR treatment. These results suggest there is a positive effect of EMDR therapy to alleviate PTSD. Second, the Kruskal-Wallis Test showed that no differences in EMDR therapy outcome by age, gender, and nationality. Third, there was a significant relationship between depression before and after EMDR treatment. This study proposes extending the use of dynamic therapy techniques through a quasi-experimental methodology to obtain results with more breadth and depth for studies in trauma and PTSD treatments.
